报告摘要:Modern technology-based societies are vulnerable to the occasional hazardous conditions that may develop due to eruptions in the atmosphere of our proxy star, the Sun. Energetic solar eruptions may take forms in i) massive radiation bursts (called flares) with energies containing millions of an atomic bomb, ii) magnetised plasma material ejected from the Sun (called Coronal Mass Ejections), iii) or bursts of high-speed particles that propagate across the interplanetary space and are harmful to our space-borne facilities or even to the astronauts themselves. These hazardous conditions together are often referred to as Space Weather. With the purpose to introduce and discuss one of the most accurate and reliable Space Weather forecasting tool that we have developed in recent years, we present new insights into the pre-flare and Coronal Mass Ejection behaviour and the evolution of sources of these most energetic eruptions in the entire Solar System. We will also address a new global facility SAMNet (Solar Activity Monitor NETwork), to be developed in partnership with China, that helps us to considerably improve our forecasting capacity and capability of eruptive Space Weather events. Finally, we will address how local dynamics in the solar atmosphere may be linked to the global evolution of the well-known 11-year solar cycle and how this link may be exploited for even further improving Space Weather forecasting to have a more secure technosphere around us. The talk will be at a level where no prior knowledge of astrophysics, advanced mathematics or plasma physics is necessary.
